Best Masks vs Omicron Options: Factors to Consider

As Utah and the entire country grapple with rising COVID-19 cases, Google searches for “best omicron mask” continue to rise. The question comes back: Which mask provides the most protection?
When choosing the best anti-omicron mask, consumers often compare cloth masks to surgical masks, as well as N95 and KN95 respirators.
Global health platform Patient Knowhow ranked five aspects of masks that consumers should be aware of, and named “high filtration” as an important mask attribute, followed by fit, durability, breathability and quality control.

Breathability: FixTheMask, a division of Medium, compared surgical masks to cloth masks. Research has shown that cloth masks generally perform better than surgical masks in breathability tests.
Meanwhile, Italian researchers compared 120 masks and found that “masks made from at least three layers of (spunbond-meltblown-spunbond) non-woven polypropylene performed best, providing good breathability and high filtration efficiency.” National Institutes of Health.
Quality Control: The FDA does not regulate surgical masks intended for public use (not medical use).

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is a research agency of the CDC. The organization was created under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1970 with the stated purpose of conducting research to reduce worker illness and improve worker well-being.
The agency oversees the certification of respirators and states that NIOSH-approved respirators can filter at least 95% of airborne particles.
At the time of publication, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had not determined how quickly the omicron variant was spreading. The agency says it is working with global partners to collect and study samples. They also reported that scientific experiments had begun.
