Many people gathered at Lalbagh Garden to collect and sort garbage thrown around the garden during the flower show. In total, 826,000 people visited the exhibition, of which at least 245,000 people visited the gardens on Tuesday alone. Authorities reportedly worked until 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to collect plastic waste and put it in bags for recycling.
About 100 people gathered for a run on Wednesday morning collected trash, including several non woven polypropylene (NPP) bags, at least 500 to 600 plastic bottles, plastic caps, popsicle sticks, wrappers and metal cans.
On Wednesday, Department of Health reporters found trash overflowing from trash cans or accumulated underneath them. This must be done before they are loaded onto a garbage truck and sent for transport. Although the path to the Glass House is completely clear, there are small piles of plastic on the outer routes and green areas.
Ranger J Nagaraj, who regularly conducts parades in Lalbagh, said that considering the huge amount of garbage generated during the flower show, the work of the authorities and volunteers in ensuring cleanliness cannot be underestimated.
“We can strictly check prohibited items at the entrance, especially plastic bottles and SZES bags,” he said. He said sellers should be held accountable for distributing SZES bags in violation of strict regulations. By Wednesday afternoon there was virtually no plastic waste in the garden. But the road leading to the metro station outside the western gate is not like that. Roads were littered with paper, plastic and food wrappers.
“We have deployed 50 volunteers from Sahas and the beautiful Bengaluru for regular cleaning of the venue since the first day of the flower exhibition,” a senior Horticulture Department official told DH.
“We do not allow the import of plastic bottles and sell water in reusable glass bottles. Staff use 1,200 steel plates and glasses to serve food. This reduces waste. “We also have a team of 100 workers. A team was formed to clean the park every time. day for 12 consecutive days. Vendors have also been asked to carry out cleaning along with their staff,” the official added. He said micro-level cleanup work would be completed within a day or two.
