Materials and protective requirements for medical protective clothing

Materials of medical protective clothing

General medical protective clothing is made of four types of non-woven fabrics: PP, PPE, SF breathable film, and SMS. Due to the different use of materials and costs, the protective clothing made from them also has different characteristics. As beginners, we have encountered certain difficulties in choosing protective clothing.

PPE coating

PPE film coated medical protective clothing, as the name suggests, refers to PP non-woven fabric coated with a layer of PE film through bonding and compression to achieve waterproofing. Due to the waterproof and non breathable properties of PE film and the stable performance of PP non-woven fabric, the medical protective clothing made inherits the waterproof and non breathable characteristics. This type of PPE film coated protective clothing is widely used in repair, construction, decoration engineering, waste disposal and other scenarios.

SF breathable film

The composition of SF breathable film and PE coated film is similar, except that PP non-woven fabric is bonded and extruded with a layer of SF breathable film. Due to its environmentally friendly, waterproof and breathable properties, it is widely used in the medical and health field. For example, medical protective clothing is made of SF breathable film. The breathable film can be divided into general resistance, high resistance, and medical grade breathable film materials due to its different production processes and levels. The performance of the medical protective clothing made from it also varies. Please refer to the manufacturer’s factory inspection report for details.

SMS non-woven fabric

SMS non-woven fabric belongs to composite non-woven fabric, which is a composite product of spinning materials and melt blown. It has the advantages of high strength, good filtration performance, no adhesive, * *, etc. Therefore, the protective clothing made of it is mainly used for medical and health labor. Generally, surgical gowns, surgical hats, hand washing clothes, handbags, etc. are also made of SMS non-woven fabric.

PP non-woven fabric

The basic PP non-woven protective clothing, commonly known as “dust-proof clothing”, is one of the medical protective clothing. Due to its moisture-proof, breathable, flexible, lightweight, non combustible, easy to decompose, rich in color, low cost, and recyclable characteristics, the medical protective clothing made of PP non-woven fabric is loved by many medical practitioners.

Medical protective products

At present, in addition to head, hand, and foot protective equipment, the medical personnel protective products used in hospitals mainly include isolation clothing, surgical clothing, and medical protective clothing for trunk protection.

Isolation clothing refers to the clothing worn by medical staff in contact with patients, family visits to patients, and other occasions;

Surgical gowns refer to specially designed clothing worn in the operating room; Protective clothing refers to the clothing worn by personnel in special areas such as medical emergencies, infectious disease areas, electromagnetic radiation areas, etc. According to different usage requirements, the three products should meet different performance requirements.

Among them, isolation gowns are Class I medical devices with relatively low performance requirements. Currently, there is no industry or national standard in China.

Surgical gowns and protective clothing are classified as Class II medical devices. China has established a performance research method for surgical gowns in the YY/T 0506 series of standards, and technical requirements for medical disposable protective clothing have been established in GB 19082.

Standard for medical protective clothing

At present, China has not established a standard for reusable medical protective clothing. Here we mainly introduce medical disposable protective clothing that meets the requirements listed in GB 19082, which is also the most needed type of protective clothing in this epidemic. This product is mainly used by medical personnel who may come into contact with potentially infectious patient blood, body fluids, secretions, and particulate matter in the air during work.

Protective clothing is usually made of composite materials, such as polyester or polypropylene spun nonwoven fabric combined with breathable microporous film or other nonwoven fabrics, or water spunlaced nonwoven fabric combined with breathable microporous film, or wood paddle composite water spunlaced nonwoven fabric. At present, polyethylene flash spinning method is widely used for non-woven fabrics, as well as spinning/melt blown/spunbond (SMS) or spinning/melt blown/melt blown/spunbond (SMMS) composite non-woven fabrics and microporous films, which are functionally treated with “three repellents and one anti” (water repellent, blood repellent, alcohol repellent, anti-static).

Non woven fabric: refers to the sheet-like fabric, fiber mesh, or mat made by friction, bonding, or a combination of these methods, which are oriented or randomly arranged fibers. It does not include paper, woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, tufted fabrics, and wet shrink felt products (GB/T 5709-1997 Terminology for Non woven Textiles).

Simply put, it is not made up of interwoven or woven yarns, but rather fibers that are directly bonded together through physical methods. Therefore, non-woven fabrics cannot produce individual threads.

Performance of medical protective clothing

Performance of medical protective clothing: Performance requirements for protective clothing materials, including protection, wearability, safety and hygiene.

Simply put, protective clothing not only needs to be moisture wicking, breathable, and comfortable to wear, but also to protect medical staff from various pollutants such as viruses and bacteria during the diagnosis and treatment process, resist the invasion of water, alcohol, and blood, and effectively resist static electricity, even preventing dust from entering.

Specifically:

① Protective requirements include liquid barrier function, water resistance in key parts of protective clothing (left and right front plaques, left and right arms, and back positions), and resistance to static water pressure not less than 1.67 kPa; The penetration resistance of synthetic blood shall not be lower than level 2, that is, synthetic blood shall not penetrate protective clothing at a pressure of 1.75kPa for 5 minutes; The water level on the outer side of protective clothing shall not be lower than level 3. This technical indicator is designed to prevent the patient’s blood, or liquids such as disinfectant and flushing solution during surgery from contaminating medical workers through protective clothing.

② Protective clothing should have the ability to prevent the penetration of micro particles, and the filtration efficiency of non oily particles at key parts and seams of the protective clothing should not be less than 70%. This technical indicator is to prevent the invasion of virus carrying microparticles (such as spitting). In addition, the seams of protective clothing must be sealed to cover the pinholes left during sewing.

③ The wearability requirements of protective clothing include sufficient strength and dimensional stability. During the tensile test, the breaking strength shall not be less than 45N and the elongation at break shall not be less than 30%. This technical indicator is to ensure the physical properties of clothing, making it less prone to damage.

④ In terms of wearing comfort of protective clothing, the moisture permeability of the protective clothing material is required to be no less than 2500g/m2 · d. This technical indicator is designed to ensure that the wearer’s sweating heat is discharged in a timely manner.

⑤ The safety and hygiene requirements of protective clothing are non-toxic, non irritating to the skin, and resistant to mold growth.

⑥ Protective clothing is disposable, and in terms of economy, it is required to ensure protective performance while minimizing costs.
