Testing and operating steps for the breathability of nonwoven fabrics

Good breathability is one of the important reasons why it is widely used. Taking related products in the medical industry as an example, if the breathability of non-woven fabric is poor, the plaster made from it will not be able to meet the normal breathing of the skin, resulting in allergic symptoms for the user; Poor breathability of medical adhesive tapes such as band aids can cause microbial growth near the wound, leading to wound infection; The poor breathability of protective clothing can greatly affect its comfort when worn. Breathability is one of the excellent properties of non-woven fabric materials, which is an important factor affecting the safety, hygiene, comfort and other performance of non-woven products.

Testing the Breathability of Non woven Fabric

Breathability is the ability of air to pass through a sample, and the testing process can be based on the method standard GB/T 5453-1997 “Determination of Breathability of Textile Fabrics”. This standard is applicable to various textile fabrics, including industrial fabrics, non-woven fabrics, and other breathable textile products. The equipment uses the GTR-704R air permeability tester independently developed and produced by Jinan Sike Testing Technology Co., Ltd. to test its air permeability. Equipment operation is simple and convenient; One click experiment, fully automated testing. Simply fix the non-woven fabric sample being tested on the device, turn on the instrument, and set the testing parameters. Just tap lightly to activate fully automatic mode with just one click.

Operation steps

1. Randomly cut 10 samples with a diameter of 50 mm from the surface of medical non-woven fabric samples.

2. Take one of the samples and clamp it in the air permeability tester to make the sample flat, without deformation, and with good sealing on both sides of the sample.

3. Set the pressure difference on both sides of the sample according to its air permeability or relevant standard requirements. The pressure difference set for this test is 100 Pa. Adjust the pressure control valve and adjust the pressure difference on both sides of the sample. When the pressure difference reaches the set value, the test stops. The device automatically displays the gas flow rate passing through the sample at this time.

4. Repeat the sample loading and pressure control valve adjustment process until the testing of 10 samples is completed.

The poor breathability of non-woven fabric products can also bring many disadvantages to their use. Therefore, strengthening the testing of non-woven fabric breathability is one of the important measures to ensure that the related products produced meet the usage requirements.

Breathability of non-woven fabric

The breathability of non-woven fabric depends on its fiber diameter and fabric load. The finer the fiber, the better the breathability, and the smaller the load of the fabric, the better the breathability. In addition, the breathability of non-woven fabric is also related to factors such as its processing method and material weaving method.

How to combine waterproof and breathable performance?

Generally speaking, waterproofing and breathability are often contradictory to each other. How to balance waterproofing with breathability is a popular research topic. Nowadays, non-woven fabric products usually adopt a multi-layer composite approach, achieving a balance between waterproofing and breathability through different fiber structures and material combinations.

Dongguan Liansheng Non woven Technology Co., Ltd. was established in May 2020. It is a large-scale non-woven fabric production enterprise integrating research and development, production, and sales. It can produce various colors of PP spunbond non-woven fabrics with a width of less than 3.2 meters from 9 grams to 300 grams.
