The difference between isolation suits, protective suits, and surgical gowns!

Isolation gowns, protective clothing, and surgical gowns are commonly used personal protective equipment in hospitals, so what is the difference between them? Let’s take a look at the differences between isolation suits, protective suits, and surgical gowns with Lekang Medical Equipment:

Different functions

① Disposable isolation clothing

Protective equipment used by medical personnel to avoid contamination with blood, body fluids, and other infectious substances during contact, or to protect patients from infection. Isolation clothing is a two-way isolation that not only prevents medical staff from being infected or contaminated, but also prevents patients from being infected.

② Disposable protective clothing

Disposable protective equipment worn by clinical medical personnel when in contact with Class A or infectious disease patients managed according to Class A infectious diseases. Protective clothing is used to prevent medical personnel from being infected and belongs to single isolation.

③ Disposable surgical gowns

Surgical gowns provide two-way protection during the surgical process. Firstly, surgical gowns establish a barrier between patients and medical staff, reducing the probability of medical staff coming into contact with potential sources of infection such as patient blood or other bodily fluids during the surgical process; Secondly, surgical gowns can block the spread of various bacteria that colonize/adhere to the skin or clothing surface of medical personnel to surgical patients, effectively avoiding cross infection of multidrug-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

Therefore, the barrier function of surgical gowns is considered a key factor in reducing the risk of infection during the surgical process.

Different production requirements

① Disposable isolation clothing

The main function of isolation clothing is to protect workers and patients, prevent the spread of pathogenic microorganisms, and avoid cross infection. It does not require sealing or waterproofing, but only serves as an isolation device. Therefore, there is no corresponding technical standard, only requiring that the length of the isolation clothing be appropriate, without holes, and when wearing and taking off, be careful to avoid contamination.

② Disposable protective clothing

Its basic requirement is to block harmful substances such as viruses and bacteria, in order to protect medical staff from infection during diagnosis, treatment, and nursing processes; Satisfying normal functional requirements, with good wearing comfort and safety, mainly used in industrial, electronic, medical, chemical and bacterial infection prevention environments. Medical protective clothing has the technical requirements of the national standard GB 19082-2009 for disposable medical protective clothing.

③ Disposable surgical gowns

Surgical gowns should be impermeable, sterile, one-piece, without a hat. Generally, surgical gowns have elastic cuffs for easy wearing and sterile gloves. Not only is it used to protect medical personnel from contamination by infectious substances, but it is also used to protect the sterile state of surgical exposed areas. The series of standards related to surgical gowns (YY/T0506) are similar to the European standard EN13795, which has clear requirements for the material barrier, strength, microbial penetration, comfort, etc. of surgical gowns.

 Different user indications

Disposable isolation clothing

1. Contact with patients with infectious diseases transmitted by contact, such as patients with infectious diseases and patients infected with multidrug resistant bacteria.

2. When implementing protective isolation for patients, such as in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with extensive burns or bone marrow transplantation.

3. May be splashed by the patient’s blood, body fluids, secretions, or excreta.

4. Whether to wear isolation clothing when entering key departments such as ICU, NICU, and protective wards depends on the purpose of medical personnel entering and their contact with patients.

5. Workers from various industries are used for two-way protection.

Disposable protective clothing

When exposed to infectious diseases transmitted through air and droplets, patients may be exposed to splashes of their blood, body fluids, secretions, and excreta.

 Disposable surgical gowns

Used during patient invasive treatment in a specialized operating room after strict aseptic disinfection.
