The difference between medical masks and surgical masks!

I believe we are not unfamiliar with masks. We can see that medical staff wear masks most of the time, but I don’t know if you have noticed that in formal large hospitals, the masks used by medical staff in different departments are also different, roughly divided into medical surgical masks and ordinary medical masks.

So what is the difference between the two?

Medical surgical masks

Medical surgical masks can isolate large particles such as droplets and block liquid splashes. But surgical masks cannot effectively filter out small particles in the air, and they are not sealed, which cannot completely prevent air from entering through the gaps at the edges of the mask. A mask suitable for medical personnel to wear during low-risk operations, suitable for the general public to wear when seeking medical treatment in medical institutions, engaging in long-term outdoor activities, and staying in densely populated areas for a long time.

A disposable medical mask is composed of a mask face and an ear band. The mask face is divided into three layers: inner, middle, and outer. The inner layer is made of ordinary sanitary gauze or non-woven fabric, the middle layer is an isolation filter layer made of melt blown fabric, and the outer layer is a special material antibacterial layer made of woven fabric or ultra-thin polypropylene melt blown material. Suitable for the general public to wear in indoor work environments where people are relatively concentrated, for ordinary outdoor activities, and when briefly stranded in densely populated areas.

The difference between surgical masks and medical masks

In fact, there is not much difference in appearance between surgical masks and medical masks. They are both composed of inner, middle, and outer layers of non-woven fabric and melt blown fabric. However, upon careful comparison, there are significant differences in the thickness and quality of the middle filter layer between different types of masks. So what are the differences between them?

1. Different outer packaging: Medical surgical masks and medical masks are not only labeled with different categories on the outer packaging, but the main identification method is that the registered product execution standards in the upper right corner of their outer packaging are different. Surgical masks are labeled as YY-0469-2011, while medical masks are labeled as YY/T0969-2013.

2. Different product descriptions: Masks made of different materials have different functions and uses. Although the outer packaging may be blurry, the product descriptions generally indicate the environment and conditions in which the mask is suitable.

3. Price difference: Medical surgical masks are relatively more expensive, while the price of medical masks is relatively lower.

4. Different functions: Disposable medical masks are only suitable for blocking the pollutants exhaled by the operator’s mouth and nose during general diagnosis and treatment operations, which is used when there is no invasive operation. Clinical hospital personnel generally wear this type of mask during work. Medical surgical masks, due to their excellent waterproof performance and particle filtration efficiency, are suitable for wearing during surgery, laser treatment, isolation, dental or other medical operations, as well as airborne or droplet borne diseases or wear; Mainly used by hospital surgical operators.

How to effectively handle used masks?

1.When in medical institutions: masks can be directly thrown into medical waste bags. As medical waste, masks will be centrally processed by professional processing institutions.

2. Normally: For ordinary people, used masks can be directly thrown into the trash can due to their lower risk. For people suspected of contracting infectious diseases, they should seek medical attention or undergo investigation and disposal, and hand over the used masks to the corresponding staff for disposal as medical waste. For people with symptoms such as fever, cough, sputum, and sneezing, or those who have come into contact with such people: it is recommended to first throw the mask into the trash can, then use 5% 84 disinfectant in a 1:99 ratio and sprinkle it on the mask for treatment. If there is no disinfectant, a sealed bag/freshness preservation bag can also be used. After sealing the mask, it can be thrown into the trash can.
