I believe we are all familiar with masks. We can see that medical staff wear masks most of the time, but I don’t know if you have noticed that in regular large hospitals, medical staff in different departments use different types of masks, roughly divided into surgical masks and ordinary medical masks. So what is the difference between the two?
Medical surgical masks
Medical surgical masks can isolate large particles such as droplets and provide a barrier against liquid splashes. But surgical masks cannot effectively filter out small particles in the air, and surgical masks are not sealed, which cannot completely prevent air from entering through the gaps at the edges of the mask. A mask suitable for medical personnel to wear during low-risk operations, and for the general public to wear when seeking medical treatment in medical institutions, engaging in long-term outdoor activities, or staying in densely populated areas for extended periods of time.
Medical mask
Disposable medical masks consist of a mask face and ear straps. The mask face is divided into three layers: inner, middle, and outer. The inner layer is made of ordinary sanitary gauze or non-woven fabric, the middle layer is an isolation filter layer made of meltblown fabric, and the outer layer is made of special materials. The antibacterial layer is made of spun fabric or ultra-thin polypropylene meltblown material. Suitable for the general public to wear in indoor work environments where people are relatively concentrated, for ordinary outdoor activities, and for brief stays in crowded places.
The difference
In fact, there is not much difference in appearance between surgical masks and medical masks. They both consist of three layers of non-woven fabric and meltblown fabric: inner, middle, and outer. However, upon careful comparison, there are also significant differences in the thickness and quality of the middle filter layer among different types of masks. So, what are the differences between them?
1. Different packaging
Medical surgical masks and medical masks are labeled with different categories on the outer packaging. The main identification method is that the registered product in the upper right corner of the outer packaging follows different standards. The surgical mask is YY-0469-2011, while the medical mask standard is YY/T0969-2013
2. Different product descriptions
Masks made of different materials have different functions and uses, and the outer packaging may be vague, but the product description generally indicates the environment and conditions that the mask is suitable for.
3. Price difference
Medical surgical masks are relatively more expensive, while medical masks are relatively cheaper.
4. Different functions
Disposable medical masks are only suitable for blocking pollutants exhaled by the operator’s mouth and nose during general diagnosis and treatment operations, that is, for use without invasive operations. Clinical hospital personnel generally wear this type of mask during work. Medical surgical masks, due to their excellent waterproof performance and particle filtration efficiency, are suitable for wearing during surgery, laser treatment, isolation, dental or other medical operations, as well as for airborne or droplet borne diseases or wearing; Mainly suitable for hospital surgical operators.
