What are the materials of medical masks?

Medical masks are divided into three types: ordinary medical masks, medical surgical masks, and medical protective masks. Among them, medical surgical masks and medical protective masks are commonly used in hospitals, and their protective and filtering properties are better. The filtration rate of ordinary medical oral devices is also high, but they are not waterproof, so they should be replaced frequently when worn.

The main material of medical masks

The specifications of medical masks are generally based on three layers, with materials including spunbond non-woven fabric, meltblown non-woven fabric, and spunbond non-woven fabric. The main reason for choosing non-woven fabric as the material is because it is lightweight and has good filtering properties, which has become the main material for mask production.

Short fibers can also be used in one layer to improve skin texture, namely ES hot-rolled non-woven fabric+meltblown non-woven fabric+spunbond non-woven fabric. The outer layer of the mask is designed to prevent droplets, the middle layer is filtered, and the memory absorbs moisture. Meltblown fabrics are generally selected to weigh 20 grams. The N95 cup type mask is composed of needle punched cotton, meltblown fabric, and non-woven fabric. The meltblown fabric usually weighs 40 grams or even more, and with the thickness of needle punched cotton, it looks thicker than flat masks in appearance, and its protective effect can reach at least 95%.

N95 is actually a 5-layer mask made of polypropylene non-woven fabric SMMMS that can filter 95% of fine particles.

Raw materials for medical surgical masks

1. Non woven fabric: This is one of the main materials used to make masks. Non woven fabrics are usually made of synthetic fibers such as polyester fibers, polypropylene fibers, or nylon fibers, which are characterized by good breathability and good filtration effect. The basic raw material for producing non-woven fabrics is polypropylene (PP).

2. Melt blown fabric: Melt blown fabric is a type of non-woven fabric that uses high-speed spinning to spray melted polypropylene particles onto a template to form a fiber web, and through electrostatic treatment, the fiber web forms a filter layer with excellent filtering effect. Meltblown non-woven fabric is used as an intermediate filter layer to isolate dust and viruses in the air, preventing them from being inhaled into the mouth and nose.

3. Non woven fabric: Non woven fabric is also a type of non-woven fabric formed from continuously stretched polypropylene fibers. It has the characteristics of high strength, low weight, and good breathability, and is commonly used as a protective layer for masks.

4. Laminated meltblown fabric: This is a composite material that combines meltblown fabric and non-woven fabric, commonly used as a filtering layer for medical masks, which can effectively filter out micro particles and bacteria.

5. Nose clip: Used to secure the nose part of a mask, usually made of plastic or metal material.

6. Elastic band: used to fix the mask in place on the face, usually made of latex or polyester fiber.

Usage method

Carefully cover your mouth and nose with a mask and fasten it firmly, minimizing the gap between your face and the mask as much as possible;

When using, avoid touching the mask – for example, to remove or clean the mask after touching it, wash your hands with soap and water or use alcohol based hand sanitizer;

After the mask becomes damp or contaminated with moisture, replace it with a new clean and dry mask;

Do not reuse disposable masks. Disposable masks should be discarded after each use and disposed of immediately after removal.

Although there are some other masks to replace standard medical masks (such as cotton mask, headband, facial mask paper, cloth strips to cover nose and mouth), there is a lack of information about the effectiveness of such materials.

If using such alternative coverings, they should only be used once, or if it is a cotton mask, it should be thoroughly cleaned after each use (i.e. washed with household detergent at room temperature). It should be removed immediately after nursing the patient. Wash hands immediately after removing the mask.

Mask Story

The masks invented in ancient China do not seem to have much technical content, just tie a piece of cloth on the face. The face mask of Japanese ninjas looks more delicate and tightly wrapped. Their purpose has nothing to do with the healthcare industry, compared to today’s celebrities: to be unrecognizable. Some ancient people used to cover their faces with cloth for much more noble purposes. The earliest recorded “mask like substance” appeared in the 6th century BC.

Dongguan Liansheng Non woven Technology Co., Ltd. was established in May 2020. It is a large-scale non-woven fabric production enterprise integrating research and development, production, and sales. It can produce various colors of PP spunbond non-woven fabrics with a width of less than 3.2 meters from 9 grams to 300 grams.
