What material is the ear strap of a mask made of?

The ear strap of a mask directly affects the comfort of wearing it. So, what material is the ear strap of a mask made of? Generally, ear cords are made of spandex+nylon and spandex+polyester. The ear strap of adult masks is generally 17 centimeters, while the ear strap of children’s masks is generally 15 centimeters.

Spandex has the best elasticity, the worst strength, poor moisture absorption, and good resistance to light, acid, alkali, and wear. Spandex is a high elastic fiber necessary for high-performance fabrics that pursue dynamism and convenience. Spandex can stretch 5-7 times longer than its original state, making it comfortable to wear, soft to the touch, and wrinkle free, maintaining its original contour at all times.

It has excellent wear resistance, moisture absorption, and elasticity, and is prone to deformation under small external forces, but its heat and light resistance are relatively poor.

The elasticity of silicone material is greater than that of cotton cloth. It is natural to place silicone ear cords on the left and right sides of a mask, which can use the high resilience of silicone to tightly embrace the mask and make it closely adhere to the nose and mouth. Once the clamping force increases, it indicates that the safety performance is more stable because the tight fit can effectively isolate bacteria and impurities from entering the respiratory tract through gaps. These are one of the advantages of using the strong resilience of silicone.

Secondly, there is the safety performance of silicone ear cords. Silicone is a widely used product in the field of safety protection, which can pass multiple testing certifications including FDA, LFGB, biocompatibility, etc. In addition, silicone can have various effects such as inhibiting bacterial growth. Traditional mask ear cords will wrap around many bacteria and other impurities, but after using silicone, this situation will not occur. In this way, the safety performance of human contact with mask ear cords is further improved. Compared with other products, silicone ear cords have higher safety performance.

YY 0469-2011 Medical Surgical Mask Standard stipulates that the breaking strength at the connection point between each mask strap and the mask body should not be less than 10N.

YY/T 0969-2013 standard for disposable medical masks stipulates that the breaking strength at the connection point between each mask strap and the mask body should not be less than 10N.

The GB T 32610-2016 standard for daily protective masks stipulates that the breaking strength at the connection point between each mask strap and the mask body should not be less than 20N.

GB T 32610-2016 Technical Specification for Daily Protective Masks specifies the method for testing the breaking strength of mask straps and the connection between mask straps and mask bodies.

Medical and health mask standards

There are currently two standards for medical protective masks. YY0469-2011 “Medical Surgical Masks” and GB19083-2010 “Technical Requirements for Medical Protective Masks”

The testing of medical masks involves three existing national standards: YY/T 0969-2013 “Disposable Medical Masks”, YY 0469-2011 “Medical Surgical Masks”, and GB 19083-2010 “Technical Requirements for Medical Protective Masks”.

YY 0469-2011 “Technical Requirements for Medical Surgical Masks” was issued by the National Medical Products Administration as a pharmaceutical industry standard and implemented on January 1, 2005. This standard specifies the technical requirements, testing methods, labeling, instructions for use, packaging, transportation, and storage of medical surgical masks. This standard stipulates that the bacterial filtration efficiency of masks should not be less than 95%.
